Sajnos mostanság kevés idő jut a hobbira, szíves elnézéseteket kérem ezért. Addig is itt egy kis érdekesség innen keletebbről:)

We've been collecting mineral rocks and fossils since 2009. The main part of our collections are from (throughout) Hungary. In our opinion it would be a good idea to share the whole experience with all of you. We hope you'll enjoy it!

Gyűjtemény rendszerezése/ Systematization of the collection
We spent the Easter with our family, so we didn't go collecting. Therefore I choose the following topic. It will be mostly interesting for newbies.
I wanted to create a database about my minerals and fossils, to know what I brought home. Before this idea I created paper tags for the stones, but this system was not the best. The tags vanish easily and there are only a few specimen on the shelf, all others are in boxes. It's clear that the solution is not my innovations, and not a break-trough, but hopefully it gives some help.
The base of the system are three things: an ID code that holds a part of the information about the piece, an Excel or an Access file with all the information, and an image gallery with the ID codes. I found a simple serial number too simple, but all the information in one code was too much. So here is the example:
Name M (Mineral)
County HU (Hungary)
Collecting Date (2014/09)
ID of the collecting and number of the piece (01/4)
The image gallery has two function. If the tag with the ID is lost, there is no problem. On the other hand I can search for one of my specimens without messing up my room or the risk that I damage some pieces of the collection. I burn the ID into the picture, but it's not necessary, in the name of the file it's good enough.

Én például a lusta megoldást használom, csoportos fényképes adatbázist készítek.

I use the lazy method. I took a group photo of the collected minerals every time, and put it in the same folder as the other photos that were taken on the collecting trip. So in the end all is in one place, you can see the circumstances of the collecting, the locality's state and every other aspects. Its works well for a hobbyist like me!

A fényképes rész alapvetően két célt szolgál.

Én ezen a sémán próbálom felépíteni jelenleg a saját adatbázisomat egyenlőre sikeresen. Elfér egy mappában, sokszorosítható és reprezentatív. Természetesen jótanácsokat, vagy más működő sémákat is szívesen fogadunk. :)
I try to build this database, and I think it's working better than the old paper types. If you have some good ideas or you know a better system, we're glad if you share it with us. :)

Helyzetjelentés az Üveghegyről / Report from "Glassy Mountain"
Már sokkal bátrabban megyünk át a hídon is :) / We are braver then before :)

Tavaszi nagytakarítás / The big clean-up
Last Sunday was a pleasurabe spring day at last, so I took my time at the garden with my minerals. I have been waiting all winter when I’d finally be able to open the garden hose and give a nice water bath to my minerals without my familiy’s scolding looks.
I still had some intact barites from Csobánka, that I successfully cleaned. Although I did not discover any breakthrough technologies, I highly recommend that you do not give up trying. My personal experience is that two things scarcely ever lead to success: friendly advices, and half-understood literature. For example hydrochloric acid is the last thing I ever try nowadays. If you ask anybody in connection with cleaning, the first answer is hydrochloric acid. It is rather annoying, because it by chance happened to destroy some really nice minerals (out of someone’s “good will” ) Anyway, personal experience is always handy, and nobody knows when we happen to find some better method than the known ones. Obviously you do not want to do this on the pieces of the collection though.
A barit pucolására kijelölt sarok/ The corner for cleaning barite
Kicsi darab nagyobb kristály / Small piece with larger crystals
Nagyobb darab, kicsi kristály/ Larger piece, with small crystals
Indokolatlan cica. / Causeless cat is causeless.
An even bigger piece, unfortunately 5cm larger than it wold be fitting, but I lack the good will to crush it into smaller pieces. Though it has some scratches as well.
Besides cleaning of barites I dropped some random rocks into acid. (Yes, I have dropped some barites in the acid as well, albeit nothing “grew out of it” :D ). I could mostly remove the filth and the random manganic subsidence from the Furmin material as well. Hoping for success I have dissolved numerous fossil fragments, calcites, and brushes in various kinds of acids. It may be worthy for a blog entry material sometime. I think it might be worthy to try these acids: citric acid, vinegar, ascorbic acid, and hydrochloric acid or oxalic acid for the braver ones.
A C-vitamin tök jól lehozta a mangánt, és a többi kő is csak egészségesebb lett tőle.
Vitamin-C removed manganese pretty well, and the stone became a better piece as well.
Nothing special happened while pouring hydrochloric acid on barite, besides that it became yellow and the bucket shrunk...
O_O
Besides correcting my favourite opal from Szokolya was a success. Although it became smaller, it was worth the try. It was intriguing for years what might hide under the ugly upper layer.
So that is how I have spent this quiet march Sunday. Maybe it was for the better, because I have made place for some new pieces, as next week we’ll report from the field.:)

The weather forecast predicted nice weather for the weekend, and this time it became true, so it would have been a shame to stay at home. We decided to go to the quarry near Mány to collect a little. The entrance was a little bit difficult, because two faithful watchdog patrolled the area, but finally we reached the reception and after consultation the collecting could began.
A bejáratnál rögtön szeptáriák köszöntöttek minket előőrsként, melyeket főleg kalcit töltött ki mm-es kristályokkal. A kezdeti csodálkozás után, feltűntek a bánya rendkívül színes agyagvariációi. A peremen haladva tovább több sziklába botlottunk, melyek összeementált kagylók vázaiból álltak. Időnként néhány nagyobb osztriga töredék is előkerült az omladékból.
Immediately, septarias greeted us near the entrance. These were filled up with mm-s of calcite crystals. Then we found the highly colored clays of the mine fascinating. We were continued our trip on the edge and found rocks which were made out of shells. Sometimes a few bigger oyster fragment were found from the rubble.
For the effective exploring, we shared our small group. Two people climbed the mine wall, to see the sand-loess layer. It was quite unpleasant there, because of the strong wind it felt like in a desert. In this area (marked with 1 in the picture) we found petrified bones, which were derived maybe from ungulates.
The others from the group were researching the clay. From there good Selenites came out. (marked with 2 in the picture)
Érdemes volt a törmelékkupacokat is átnézni, volt rajtuk néhány érdekes kimállott darab. (főleg gipsz és hengeres goethites-limonitos konkréciók)
The reviewing of the rubbles was also worthy, there were some interesting pieces. (mainly gypsum and cylindrical goethite-limonite concrecions)
We continued the searching in the back side of the mine, where was a big landslide. We thought that, we were not dirty enough for the day, so we climbed it. This idea turned out good, the result speaks for itself:
Late in the afternoon we became fed up with the sand storm and left. The collecting was more or less a success, we did not find good mineral specimens, but the fossils compensated greatly for this!

A hatékonyabb felderítés céljából, kettévált kis csapatunk. Ketten felmentünk a bánya peremén lévő homokos-löszös részt átkutatni. Ezen a részen (képen 1 jelöléssel) találtunk csontmaradványokat, feltehetően patás állatoktól származnak.
A bagázs másik fele átvizsgálta az agyagot, amiből meredeztek a szelenites rétegek. (képen 2 jelöléssel)For the effective exploring, we shared our small group. Néhány szó a Borostyánról/Some words about Amber
We have already seen many different type of amber on the mineral fairs this year. Because I had caught the influenza, I have a little bit of time to collect some information about it. Our blog is not a hard boiled science blog, so I just want to speak about some common things, that will interest the everyday collectors.
At first we can start with a misbelief. Amber is not a mineral. It do not has a crystalline-matrix or crystalline-form, and it is made of organic materials (resin). So it's an organic gemstone, like pearl. Because it has a beautiful color and overall aesthetic look, mankind have valued it from of old. So here are some tips that you should keep on your mind if you buy amber.
Many people mistook real amber with copal, like me 2 posts ago... But what is the difference between the two materials Molecular polymerization, resulting from high pressures and temperatures produced by overlying sediment, transforms the resin first into copal. Sustained heat and pressure drives off terpenes and results in the formation of amber.
Normally copal is a good thing, it's only a scam if you buy the cheaper copal as regular amber. The copal have mostly lighter yellow color and stronger resign smell if you heat it.

The imitations out of synthetic resin or plastic are could be real problem. But the natural resin is lighter then the synthetic one. Moreover the alcohol, acetone and ether resolve those materials easily, and if you scratch a synthetic one with a knife, there will be some plastic chips, If you scratch natural amber or copal there will be only white powder.
On the other hand, the bugs in amber were stuck in tree sap, and you can see that they were trying to escape - they'll have broken wings, be twisted at odd angles, and generally LOOK like bugs trying to get out of tree sap. Also, there's usually a bunch of debris in any piece of amber. If there's one large bug and no smaller ones, bits of leaves, broken off wings, or dirt, be suspicious.

Thirdly it's good to know, that amber and copal could be heat treated. The fossilized resin texture is able to rework under pressure, and able to change its color to be darker and it becomes much more clearer then before. It's a good jewelry technique but I think for collectors the raw one is better choice.
Az utóbbi időben találkozhattunk több félével egyaránt melyek származási helytől, színtől, kortól függően különféle áron kerültek a magyar piacra. Lássunk itt néhányat.

Összességében pedig:
- A borostyán nem ásvány!
- Hamisítják, de kis odafigyeléssel könnyen felismerhető.
- Fiatal éretlen változata a kopál.
-továbbiakban: Borostyán
In total:
-Amber is not a mineral!
-There are some imitations, but if you know the stone you cant miss it.
-Younger type of amber is the copal.
